Feedback on Mercury Lounge Show 5.21.2008

    Justin here.

Must say, your set list and stage presence were awesome.  Your musicianship is awesome, your lyrics evocative and your instrumental beats are outstanding. You played all my favorite songs off the new album: Miasmal Smoke & The Yellow Bellied Freaks, Murderer, Search Party and Laser Beams. [WS also played archaeologist, dead letter, weighty ghost and oblivion]

Would have loved to hear some stuff off the first two though: Orca, Sore, Avalanche, Ambulance, Listen [Listen, Listen], Migration, Nerves Normal, Breath Normal.  to name a few.  but i understand.

Thanks for coming to NYC and much appreciation for the autographs on the CD as well.  Glad to finally get to see you play, graduate school does not allow much time for shows.

I do have a few interesting side notes though.

First off, my friend and I were wondering what is up with wintersleep opening up for two local suck ass bands?

Normally, a set list starts out weak and grows and by the time the headliner begins you have gone from ok to good/great.

Not this show.  It went in the reverse order.  From great (wintersleep) to bad (second hand) to just plain awful (king left - the headliner).

Now I know that Wintersleep does not have the biggest fanbase in the US, from what I can tell.  But I think you can do a lot better in terms of bands you book with then the two you were with tonight, both in terms of their genre, their fanbase, their quality, etc.

Another problem.  why does no one show up for the early acts anymore?  It seems the baseball phenomenon of showing up in the third inning is the same philosophy people have for shows.  Skip the early acts and just show up for the headliner.  I have seen this at numerous shows.  My friend even brought up his experience at the Sonic Youth/Pearl Jam show he went to where the stadium was basically empty for Sonic Youth and did not fill up till about the end of their set.  Its Sonic Youth people! What is wrong with you.

Sorry about my short rant.  I was just so extremely bothered by the lack of support for wintersleep and the lack of quality in the other bands on the bill who had more people there for them.  Wintersleep deserves much better.

    Hey Justin!!

I'm glad I finally got to see Wintersleep live.  You guys are great. Way too good to be lapdogs for some high school battle of the bands rejects. In a city of 8 million I would figure Wintersleep would have gotten more support than the 6-10 of us who were there to actually see WS. I guess its their loss, and I am extremely greatful that the band didn't hold it against those of us who were there. Hope you guys come around to NYC again, I know Justin and I will be there. I second wanting to hear Orca and would add People Talk to that list of favs as well.

Thanks Paul for the setlist, I really appreciate it!

    Chris
